In the period from January to June 2022, the accommodation and restaurant sector grew 44.23% as a result of the good development of the restaurants subsector at 43% and the accommodation subsector at 93.75%, showing its recovery path during this year, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

The restaurants subsector accumulated a variation of 43%, determined by the dynamism of its four components, even within the framework of the State of National Emergency that has been in place since March 2020.

The group of restaurants increased 52.90%, due to the dynamism of the activities of poultry, fast food, restaurants, chifas, coffee restaurants, cevicherías, tourist restaurants and meats and grills, as a result of a greater coverage of the delivery service, capacity of 30% until 100% within the establishments according to alert level, reopening of branches, personalized attention and presentation of a new line of food products (light and vegetarian line).

Likewise, the businesses of sandwich shops, international food, Japanese food, Italian food, Creole food, ice cream parlors, sweet shops and pizzerias reflected growth, being helped by the celebrations of each month.

Beverage service activities registered a variation of 73.67% due to the increase in sales in the cafeterias, restaurant bars, juice bars, bars and nightclubs, driven by the organization of events on the occasion of Easter, Labor Day, Mother’s and Father’s Day, as well as the variety of offers in drinks and snacks, theme parties, extension of business hours and remodeling of premises.

Other food service activities showed an increase of 7.27%, due to the greater contribution of food concessionaires, with the expansion of contracts with companies and institutions for the attention of operating and administrative personnel in breakfasts, lunches and dinners, keeping high quality standards and permanent improvement in the production process.

Likewise, the supply of meals for contractors (food services for transport companies) grew due to greater contracts with air and land transport companies, in accordance with the greater demand for promotions on flights, tourist packages and holidays.

The food supply by request (catering) rose 132.30%, favored by the greater requirement of food preparation and distribution services for social and corporate events, in the service of buffets, executive breakfasts, conferences, conventions and corporate refreshments.

This Monday, the plenary session of the Congress of the republic approved the substitute text of bills 714 and 2148 that proposes lowering the VAT from 18 to 8% to restaurants and hotels until 2024as economic reactivation measures for micro and small businesses.

This bill that proposes the establishment of a special and temporary rate of General Sales Tax (IGV) It was approved by 90 votes in favor, 14 against and 9 abstentions.

It should be noted that the VAT reduction to 8% will come into force from the official publication of the standard until December 31, 2024. In addition, it includes other items such as tourist accommodation, catering services and food concessionaires.

Before the approval of this initiative, the head of the Economy, Banking, Finance and Financial Intelligence Commission, Silvia Monteza Fachoindicated that its purpose is to support the economic reactivation of this large business economic segment that has suffered the devastating impact as a result of the covid-19 pandemic, and to make survival viable and avoid the closure of these activities.
