BOSTON (AP) — JD Martinez had three hits, including a game-tying RBI single in the ninth, and Tommy Pham ended the engagement with another hit in the 10th, as the bottom Boston Red Sox clinched Friday night. 3-2 to Aaron Judge and the leaders New York Yankees.
New York pitchers retired 12 straight Boston sluggers before closer Clay Holmes gave away two walks with one out in the ninth inning. Then he allowed Martinez’s single to the center of the diamond.
Judge hit his major league-leading 46th homer of the season in the third inning. He reached base for the fourth time leading off the 10th when he walked.
However, Garrett Whitlock struck out Josh Donaldson and Gleyber Torres to end the threat.
In the bottom half, automatic runner Christian Arroyo anchored at third base with a ground out. He was there after a bunt by pinch-hitter Reese McGuire, which became a single.
Pham, acquired before the trade deadline expired, singled down the third line to end the game.
Whitlock (3-2) struck out three and walked one over two innings.
Lou Trivino (1-7) allowed two hits and got one out for New York, which remained 10 games ahead in its division despite losing three games and losing eight of nine games.
For the Yankees, the Venezuelan Torres 5-0.
For the Red Sox, the Dominican Rafael Devers 3-1. Mexican Alex Verdugo 3-1 with a run scored.
