The Mexican soccer league has been played since 1902 in an amateur way and from 1943 in a professional way. For most of its history, the league was played in year-long tournaments.whose champion was the team that scored the most points in that period.

However, it is in 1996 when the leagues begin, that is, the short tournaments that defined the champion with a series of direct eliminations currently known as the leaguewhich are carried out on a semi-annual basis.

In the case of descent, several formats have been implemented for its application. for several decades the last team in the general table was the one that went to the second division.

For a time the call was disputed “No relegation league”in which two or up to four teams located at the bottom of the general table played in direct eliminations for non-relegation, as long as the difference in points between the teams was not four points.

In the nineties it was applied the percentage as a method of descent, which consists of dividing the total points obtained in a given period of tournaments by the number of matches played in that same period; being the team that has the lowest number as a result at the end of the season the one that would descend.

Since 2020, the descent no longer exists as such in Liga MX and the Second Division, which had the name Liga de Ascenso, was renamed Liga de Expansión. Which caused a lot of criticism. However, the decline is expected to return as such.

Liga MX is currently made up of 18 teams and the two teams with the most championships in its history are América and Chivas. In contrast, there are two active clubs that Querétaro and Atlético San Luis have not won a championship in the first division.

The players who have scored the most goals in the history of Liga MX are Cabinhowith 312 goals; Carlos Hermosillowith 294; Jared Borguetti, with 252; Y Jose Saturnino Cardozowith 249. While the players with the most caps are: oscar perezwith 741; Oswaldo Sanchezwith 725; Benjamin Galindo, with 700; Y John Paul Rodriguezwith 685.
