However, the rumor began to circulate on social networks that during the morning conference next Tuesday, August 9, López Obrador will announce the replacement of Gómez Álvarez, who allegedly will be Maria Elena Alvarez-Buylla, head of the National Council for Science and Technology (Conacyt); This was confirmed by the journalist Mario Maldonado through his Twitter account.

The controversial director of Conacyt was appointed head of said institution in 2018, with the arrival of the Fourth Transformation to the federal administration. However, she has been one of the most controversial officials around her, from scandalous statements to the cancellation of scholarships and financial support for science.

The academic has been recognized on multiple occasions for her research. In 1994 received the Society of American Naturalists Young Investigator Award and three years later she was decorated with the Distinction of the National University for Young Academics, while in 1999 she received another award from the Mexican Academy of Sciences.

However, her academic achievements are not why AMLO’s presumed letter to head the SEP is recognized in Mexico, since several scandals revolve around the biologist, such as her statements about the “neoliberal science” or “Western science” with which the official detracted from the technological advances of the last century.
