The EC approves 261 million euros for Palestinian refugees until 2024



Brussels, Aug 9 The European Commission (EC) approved this Tuesday a contribution of 261 million euros for the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) until 2024.

This amount includes €246 million in three-year EU funding for UNRWA and an additional €15 million from the Food and Resilience Facility to tackle food insecurity and mitigate the impact of the war in Ukraine, the EC explained in a statement.

“The EU, as UNRWA’s long-term partner, is committed to continuing to provide political and financial support for its activities,” said the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, who said that this United Nations agency “It remains crucial to providing necessary protection and essential services for Palestine refugees, supporting peace and stability in the region.”

He assured that the Union will continue to support UNRWA in “all its fields of action, including East Jerusalem.”

“Our support for UNRWA is a key element in our strategy to contribute to the promotion of security, stability and development in the region, which also helps to keep alive the prospects for a sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” he concluded. .

Since 1971, the EU and UNRWA have maintained a strategic partnership to support the development, humanitarian and protection needs of Palestine refugees and to promote stability in the Middle East.

Last November Borrell, together with the European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, and the UNRWA Commissioner General, Philippe Lazarini, signed the renewal of an agreement between the two parties for the period 2021-2024 that marked 50 years of your association

In that joint declaration, the EU committed itself to continue to support UNRWA politically and to guarantee it predictable and multi-annual financial resources.

UNRWA provides basic services to more than 5.8 million Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza. EFE
