The Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia and the American Serena Williams surpassed the first round of the WTA Masters in Toronto on Monday, while the Romanian Simona Halep, 15th favorite, overwhelmed the Croatian Donna Vekic.

The Brazilian was far superior with her first serve, making 74% effective against only 59% of her rival and will face local Leylah Fernández, thirteenth seed, who defeated Australian Storm Sanders 6-4, 6 in the second round. -7 (2/7), 6-3
On the other hand, Serena Williams submitted the Spanish Nuria Parrizas Díaz with scores of 6-3, 6-4 in two hours.
Serena, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, played just her second match this season and her first on a hard court since the 2021 Australian Open 18 months ago.
“I think there is light at the end of the tunnel. I’m getting closer to the light,” Serena said after her debut. “I can’t wait until I get to that light. I love playing, it’s amazing, but I can’t do it forever.”
The youngest of the Williams will clash in the second round against the winner of the game between the Swiss Belinda Bencic, twelfth seed, and the Czech Tereza Martincova.
Romanian Halep, seeded 15th, swept Croatian Vekic in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.
Halep is the tennis player with the most victories in Masters category tournaments with 180, ahead of Belarusian Victoria Azarenka and retired Danish Caroline Wozniacki, who have 177 each.
The Romanian notched her 33rd victory in 2022 to advance in one of the five tour tournaments she has won twice (2016, 2018).
Halep will now go against the Chinese Shuai Zhang or the Spanish Cristina Bucsa.
At the end of the long day, the Swiss Jil Teichmann defeated the veteran Venus Williams in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 16 minutes.
This is the second defeat suffered by the oldest of the Williams, 42, in consecutive weeks after the loss in the first round in the tournament in Washington.
For her part, the 25-year-old Swiss player is off to a good start on her clay-court journey this year, having defeated five players from the ´Top 20´ en route to reaching the semi-finals in Madrid, the quarter-finals in Rome and Round of 16 in Paris.
Teichmann, who is now 1-0 ahead at the all-time high with Venus, will face second-seeded Estonian Anett Kontaveit in the second round.
