UPDATE 1-Medvedev goes to the final of the Los Cabos Mexican Open after coming back and beating Serbian Kecmanovic

MEXICO CITY, Aug 5 (Reuters) – Russian Daniil Medvedev, number one in the world, advanced to the final of the Los Cabos Mexican Tennis Open on Friday after beating Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6(0), 6-1 in a match where he had to come back from a big disadvantage in the first set.

In the final, Medvedev will face defending champion Cameron Norrie of Britain on Saturday, who beat Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

“It was a very intense match, especially from the back of the court. At the beginning I had to make the adjustments and I was able to figure it out,” Medvedev told ESPN in an interview after the match.

In the first set, Medvedev recovered from a 4-1 deficit and took it to a tie break which he won 7-0 with powerful serves.

For the second set, Medvedev took advantage of Kecmanovic’s bewilderment and easily overcame him with powerful serves that left the world number 38 with no chance to react.

Medvedev hit 12 aces throughout the match and broke Kecmanovic’s serve three times.

“I played very well, at a high level. Tomorrow, the key to the final will be to show my best tennis and win every point. I’m in great shape for the next tournaments and I feel ready to fight for the title tomorrow,” he said. Medvedev at a press conference.

With the win, Medvedev will remain the world number one until the US Open final on September 11.

“I didn’t know that with this victory I would secure number one in the world,” said the 26-year-old tennis player.

The tournament, category 250, is played on hard courts in the resort of Los Cabos in the state of Baja California Sur. (Report by Carlos Calvo Pacheco)
