The MAMBO celebrates ‘Ramírez before Villamizar’

Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar is one of the most important artists in the history of Colombian sculpture. With a career spanning six decades, the man born in Pamplona, ​​Norte de Santander, is one of the proper names to understand the evolution and development of Colombian art throughout the 20th century.

On the occasion of the centenary of his birth, the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art (MAMBO) presents the exhibition ‘Ramírez before Villamizar’, in which twenty-two pieces from his sculpture collection will be shown to the public, specially selected for the occasion and which reveal its beginnings before becoming relevant in the national art scene.

Thus, the title ‘Ramirez before Villamizar’ refers to the fact that these works were signed by the author when he was still known as Eduardo Ramírez, before adding Villamizar as part of the personal brand that gave him national and international projection.

Attached is a photographic archive made up of a series of letters and negatives made by Hernán Diaz, one of the key figures in the history of photography in Colombia and a close personal friend of Ramírez Villamizar.

Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar defined, together with Edgar Negret, the principles on which sculpture was based in Colombia and its development throughout the 20th century. His style was defined by the balance between the forms designed, a distribution of weight that was always harmonic, as well as by the use of emptiness as one more element of expression in his work. Later, his fascination with pre-Columbian forms defined the impact of milestones in his career such as the sculptural work Memoria de Machu-Picchu, his mural El Dorado or his most remembered installations, the Space Ship and its 16 Towers in the Bogotá National Park. .

His exhibitions took him to the most important galleries in America and Europe, cementing his reputation as a visionary of the forms in Colombian sculpture.

`Ramirez before Villamizar’ is the fourth exhibition organized by MAMBO within the framework of the ‘Collection on Stage’ series. Conceived by the curator Germán Escobar, its objective is to make accessible to the general public the wide collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs and serigraphs that are part of the collection cataloged to date by the institution, including a wide repertoire of modern and postmodern artists.

The objective of this series is to generate debates and discussions around contemporary artistic practices and their forms.

“It is important that Colombians know how valuable the Museum Collection is. That is why we started different research, recovery, conservation and exhibition processes; to stage, gradually, the more than 4,700 pieces of the collection”, says Escobar.
