British Norrie beats Aliassime and will defend the title against Medvedev

Los Cabos (Mexico), 5 Aug. The British Cameron Norrie, third seed, won this Friday 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and signed his pass to the final in Los Cabos, in which he will defend the title against the Russian Daniel Medvedev.

In the first set Norrie, twelfth in the ATP ranking, won 94 percent of the points with the first service and made a difference in favor with a break in the fifth game in which he went up to the net twice and won the points to Auger-Aliassime.

For the second segment, the British lost the serve in the second game, but the Canadian, ninth racket in the ATP, could not confirm and it was until the eighth in which he broke against a rival who was not as fine as at the start of the duel.

The deciding set began with Norrie more focused, he broke in the fourth “game” and took a 4-1 lead in the fifth. Auger-Aliassime made numerous unforced errors in decisive moments and missed several chances to level the match, most notably in the ninth game, which kept him out of the final.

In the first semi-final Medvedev, the top seed, defeated Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6(0), 6-1.

Kecmanovic, one of the fastest-growing players on tour in recent months, stunned with a break in game four, but the Russian returned with a striking dissertation and great serving effectiveness.

Daniil broke Miomir’s service in the seventh “game”, and in the tie break he swept his rival 7-0, a blow from which Miomir did not recover, overcome in the second round.

With the victory, the Russian, who will seek his first title of 2022 this Saturday, confirmed himself as number one in the world for the remainder of the month, with many possibilities of finishing the year at the top of the ranking.

Medvedev and Norrie have met only once, in 2019 at the Shanghai Masters, where the Russian won 6-3, 6-1.

The Los Cabos Open, ATP 250 tournament, is played on a hard court with a prize pool of $920,625, of which the champion will take $125,040.EFE
