Wainwright and Molina together, Cardinals shut out Cubs

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched seven unblemished innings with veteran catcher Yadier Molina behind the plate, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 6-0 on Tuesday night.

Paul Goldschmidt homered and drove in three runs to lead St. Louis’ offense. Dylan Carlson hit another two-run homer and made a big catch in center field.

Nolan Arenado also blew the fence.

Molina returned recovered from a knee inflammation that kept him out since June 16 and again teamed up with Wainwright. The two 40-year-old players teamed up to shut out Chicago.

Wainwright (8-8) allowed six hits and struck out four with one walk. Molina threw like he did in his Gold Glove season, retiring Rafael Ortega when he tried to steal second in the first episode.

This was Wainwright and Molina’s 317th game together, surpassing the Boston/Milwaukee Braves duo of Warren Spahn and Del Crandall for second in major league history since 1901. The only pair to top them is Mickey Lolich. and Bill Freehan (324) of the Detroit Tigers between 1963-75.

For the Cubs, Venezuelans Rafael Ortega 4-1, Wilson Contreras 2-1.

For the Cardinals, Puerto Rican Yadier Molina 4-0.
