The spokesman for the National Security Council, John Kirby, has affirmed this Monday that the president of the House of Representatives of the United States, Nancy Pelosi, “has the right” to travel to Taiwan if she wants to.

Asked about the possible escalation of tension that would be generated with China before a visit by Pelosi to Taiwan, Kirby has assured that the president of the US Congress “has the right to make her own decision”adding that the Biden Administration is not going to take action on the matter.

“Our responsibility is to make sure that she and her team have all the information they need. And we maintain that line of communication throughout a journey as we should, of course, it’s a requirement. But the president and her staff who advise her make the decision ” Kirby has said, according to a White House statement.

Likewise, the spokesman for the National Security Council has stressed that, so far, Pelosi has not confirmed in any way that she will go to Taiwan. “I have not seen any such confirmation. And again, it would be the president and her staff who would have to announce it”has added.

However, in the event that the president of the House of Representatives decided to go, she would travel safely because she would have the support of the United States Government.

“Well, without going into details, I think it can be understood that part of our responsibility is to make sure that she can travel safely. And I can assure you that she will.”Kirby responded to questions from the press about the danger for Pelosi to go to Taiwan due to threats from China.

On the other hand, asked about the possible reaction of China – which considers Taiwan as part of its territory, so it does not accept that a US official travels there officially, Kirby has indicated that he does not believe there is a reason for ” This escalates.”

“There are many national security interests, as well as interests with our allies and partners that are at stake in the Indo-Pacific”, detailed the spokesman, who has advanced that so that the conflict does not escalate it is important that “the lines of communication between Washington and Beijing remain open.

In addition, he recalled that another president of the US Congress –Newt Gigrich– already visited Taiwan in 1997, at which time there was no increase in tensions.
