In Mexico, Smith and Frankel speak of “complicated” Targaryens

MEXICO CITY (AP) — British actors Matt Smith and Fabien Frankel visited Mexico City to present the first episode of the new series in George RR Martin’s saga, “House of the Dragon.” ), set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” (“Game of Thrones”).

For both of them it was their first visit to the Mexican capital and, in the case of Frankel, he had found out just a couple of days before that he would travel to Mexico, where he was accompanied by his brother Max.

“I feel like I’m in a dream right now,” Frankel said Friday in a series chat.

The actors expressed interest in visiting the canals of Xochimilco and were on the red carpet and cocktail party at the premiere at the old Colegio de San Ildefonso, a colonial building in the heart of the Historic Center with quarry walls reminiscent of those in the series. .

They announced that in this production, which opens on August 21 on the HBO Max streaming service, much more is known about the Targaryen dragon tamer family, in which there is a lot of tension to know who will be the heir to the throne.

“The Targaryen family dynamic is very, very complicated,” Smith said. “But at the same time they are a normal family.”

“From the outside they are a pretty damaged family,” Frankel added.

“Yes, they need a lot of therapy,” Smith conceded.

One characteristic of the Targaryens, added Smith, who plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, is that they have a highly contrasting light side and a dark side.

“There is a theory that when a Targaryen is born, you can flip a coin and on one side there is greatness and on the other side there is madness. In Daemon’s case, the coin is still up in the air,” he said. “I think that greatness and that madness is inherited a lot… but I think what is inherited is ruthless violence, to be honest, among the Targaryens.”

Frankel, for his part, plays the nobleman Criston Cole, who is not from the Targaryens, but is very close to them.

“It becomes a very integral part of the Targaryens’ rise to power,” he said.

Both actors came to the series with several previous titles in their careers and with experience in theater. Smith was known to millions as Prince Philip of England in the Netflix series “The Crown,” and has also acted in “Doctor Who” as the famous doctor, as well as in the films “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” + Prejudice + Zombies”) and “Morbius”.

Frankel is the son of the late British actor Mark Frankel, and his credits include the miniseries “The Serpent” and the upcoming film “Venice at Dawn.” After knowing that he had the role of him in “House of the Dragon”, he said that he celebrated by drinking tequila and talking to his mom.

The first chapter will not disappoint “Game of Thrones” fans: it has dragons, blonde wigs and bloody duels.

“You can expect a lot of violence and a lot of love and I think that’s the essence of the show, I think it’s about violence and love at the end of the day,” Frankel said.

For both of them, part of the secret to the success of “House of the Dragon” is that they have an excellent foundation with George RR Martin’s books.

“There are certain themes that everyone resonates with,” Frankel said. “Most people have families, most people fall in love, most people feel anger and anxiety, and he writes characters who feel those things.”

“He writes great characters, there’s a tremendous depth and richness to the world he builds and I think he takes part of the (real) story, I think he takes things from literal historical events and adds a layer of fantasy to it and in that process something magical happens. , he’s a wonderful writer,” Smith added.

Asked if she had Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons immortalized by Emilia Clarke in “Game of Thrones,” in mind when playing her character, Smith said definitely not.

“I didn’t think about it at all because Daenerys is my great, great, great, great…great-niece or granddaughter, whatever she is,” she said.

They are aware, and even celebrate, that their series comes at a time when there are many popular fantasy and science fiction productions, unlike when “Game of Thrones” premiered more than a decade ago.

“We’re very excited to see ‘Lord of the Rings,’” Frankel said of “The Rings of Power,” which like “House of the Dragon” had a recent showing at the convention. of pop culture Comic-Con. “We got to meet some of the cast at Comic-Con. It was a nice feeling, they were excited for our series and we were excited for theirs.”

“On the surface at least,” Smith added with British humor. “But we are.”
